The Alphabet: Mans Best Friend

“A As In Dog” is an interactive poem created by Marko Niemi and Dan Waber. The creators are both digital expressionists with Waber more interested in manipulating text and Niemi writing interactive poetry, the two combined to put their skills to use in an original and beautiful way. The minimalist poem takes the alphabet, displays it in a grid layout and attaches hyperlinks to each letter.

Upon clicking each letter, the reader is taken to a page with the letter and a related animal to it. This may seem simple as the average person would assume each letter would be tied to an animal with a corresponding letter, such as “b” and “beaver”; however the true poetry comes from the image of the letter. Letters are tied to animals the shape of the letter can take on, and interactive pictures display the letter in that animals action.Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 4.29.47 PM

true visual simplicity matched with detailed code and text combine to create an effect no other text can match. Humor paired with originality create a piece of electronic literature that will open the reader’s eyes to what they can generate from seeing letters in the alphabet.

Viewing the poem will have you revisiting each link countless times; leaving readers in amazement at the skill taken to create such a visually simple piece.
