Response to Joyride

The piece’s opening images, accompanied by the sound effects, are jolting, eliciting a realistic and eerie response. I am immediately affected by it, and it quite literally gives me goosebumps.  Its photographic affects add to the overall tone of realness and legitimacy, as if this event actually happened to someone close.


As it says in the original post, it isn’t always easy to figure out just what each of the carefully chosen words represent with each photo.  However, there are some interesting choices.  One example is the word w(hole) in the photograph with a shattered windshield.  The windshield itself used to be whole until the accident, resulting in a hole, probably from a body thrown from the car.

The final image which contains the words “Waste of child” definitely ties the entire poem together, cementing the type of story it portrays.  To me, it represents the death of someone’s child; probably an inexperienced driver who was reckless.  In the same image that contains the word “w(hole)” are the words “upper” and “downer.” There are other drug references in other images, like the word “crack.”  Therefore, they not only correspond to their respective image, but they also infer some sort of drug misuse.  I’m not sure if there was only one driver, but for me, this work definitely brings to question how teens get into accidents.

This poem brings me back to memories of driver’s education where we were “scared” into driving safely.  It’s also very powerful in that the final words “the waste of child” refer to the parental viewpoint, inciting a feeling of guilt and loss.

    I think this is an excellent example of ELit putting its readers into situations they’ve never been in before, or giving them virtual experiences that might help them gain a greater understanding of the world around them. As an English major, I am always told that I will have greater people skills and a greater understanding of other’s situations/empathy for others because I have “experienced” so many things through reading. It is really interesting to add the visuals and sound effects to such an idea, and it possibly makes the point event stronger by making the experience feel more real. This would be awesome to use in a driver’s ed class, or a STOP class for those who have gotten a DUI. It really is effective and I support works like this that use ELit as a platform for life education.
